Apple designers will wait

John Nack, who is responsible for the development of Photoshop in Adobe, described in his blog the company's plans to transfer the Creative Suite package to 64-bit rails. The support of new processors, long awaited by owners of monstrous workstations, will appear in the next, 4th version of CS. However, the most notorious of them, the salt of the earth and the white bone of a designer tribe - the owners of the Macs - will have to wait still.

The reason why running under Windows Photoshop and Illustrator will now work on average 10% faster than under MacOS, surprisingly enough, has become the position of Apple itself. Last June, the company said it would not add support for 64-bit instructions to its old procedural API Carbon . All software vendors who want to "enter the 21st century", Apple recommended to rewrite their applications under the new Cocoa platform. But in order to port CS to it, Adobe must actually rewrite all the several million lines of its code.

This task, according to the developers, can be solved already by the release of CS 5. However, it’s too early to make promises: even the Final Cut Pro package from Apple itself is still working with Carbon.
