History of Audio-Technica

Hi, Habr!

I propose to once again plunge into the history of a single brand, as we did with Nintendo , Westone and Samsung . This time it will be a question of one of the best manufacturers of headphones, microphones and other sound equipment in the world — Audio-Technica, founded in 1962.

Hideo Matsushita founded the company at the age of 42 years.

Pickups and turntables

In 1962, Hideo Matsushita in Shinjuku, a special district of Tokyo, the administrative center of this city, founded the company Audio-Tehcnica. The first product was sound pickups for records, and the first market was other sound equipment manufacturers.

The first two models, AT-1 and AT-3, began to be sold to audio equipment manufacturers in Japan. The high quality of the pickups led to the fact that already a year later the company moved to a larger room and increased production. At the same time began selling AT-5. As a result, in 1969 the company entered the world market with its pickups.

In 1986, the company released the AT33ML / OCC sound pickup, which became the first PCOCC sound pickup. A landmark event in the world of audio.

Also in the eighties, the company very successfully sold a portable record player for vinyl records and audio cassettes Mister Disc, which was later replaced by Sound Burger. It looks very original.

In 2012, the company released the Lp1240 spinner with a DJ module.

And for home use, Audio-Technica has this model - LP60USB.

Microphones

The company began selling microphones only in 1978, 16 years after its foundation. The first was the AT-800 series.

Surprisingly, I did not find the cover image of this brochure of better quality.

image

In 1981, Audio-Technica decided to make such an offer for professional musicians: a whole "wardrobe of microphones." Here is a colorful set. It seems to be so-so. The set includes seven ATM-41 microphones.

image

In 1985, the company began production of the UniPoint range of ultra-compact microphones.

image

Released in 1991, the AT4033 microphone was priced above $ 1,000. The company broke the bar - in the sense that the analogs of this microphone cost less.

image

In 1994, the AT4050 / CM5 condenser microphone was introduced to the world. Special technology used in the manufacture of membranes, ensures the stability of the microphone. Its purpose is to record an acoustic guitar, combo, female vocals and so on.

Microphones class higher appeared a little later. These were the professional models AT4060 and AT895.

In 2007, the company introduced the AT2010 microphone, and also patented the SpectraPulse technology.

Wireless microphones built using SpectraPulse technology. This technology is used in cases where the operating range is not as important as data security and usability. For example, in conference rooms and courts.

Sport and music

The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Russia ranked second overall with 26 gold, 21 silver and 16 bronze medals. Of the athletes, Alexei Nemov showed himself better, taking six medals at once, of which two were gold, one silver and three bronze.

At the 1996 Olympics, all the microphones and headphones that were used for broadcasting and for conducting were produced by Audio-Technica. This was not the end of the company's march to the world of sports: they supplied the same equipment for the Sydney Olympics in 2000, in Salt Lake City in 2002. At the next Olympics, Athens Olympic Broadcasting SA used Audio-Technica microphones. And in Beijing was the same.

Many musicians used Audio-Technica microphones for their shows. In 1990, for example, the positive reviews of Gloria Estefan received a ATW-1032 wireless microphone.

For the first time Audio-Technica "got" to the Grammy award ceremony in 2006. The company has equipped the event with more than two hundred microphones. Until 2013, nothing has changed. In the photo - Jack White and Ruby Amanfu (Who?) Sing into the Audio-Technica AT4050 microphone at the 2013 Grammy ceremony, for which a total of 250 microphones were installed.

Where else do Audio-Technica microphones use? In the halls of the US Congress, at the debate in the New York police. And, of course, some musicians prefer the microphones of this company: for example, Metallica and Slipknot.

Headphones

The company released the first series of headsets by 1974. It was a line of dynamic headphones AT-700.

Four years later, the ATH-8 and ATH-7 condenser headphones come out.

The company received an award for innovation in the design and technology of ATH-ANC7b headphones, released in 2009.

In 2007, Audio-Technica launches QuietPoint® Noise-Canceling Headphones - active noise-canceling headphones, and the ATH-ANC7b QuietPoint model, released in 2009, immediately takes the Innovations 2010 Design and Engineering award.

In September 2007, the company released the legendary Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones. They are designed for professional monitoring and mixing in recording studios.

image

The main part of the company's production is professional equipment. Including intra-channel monitors for musicians. This image shows the wireless intra-channel monitors M3 released in 2008.

In 2009, a joint project of Audio-Technica and CrystalRoc was implemented. Crystal Headphones PRO700 covered over 5000 Swarovski crystals.

In 2012, the company releases ATH-ES10 portable headphones with a 53-mm driver in a titanium case.

Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 is one of the newest models of the company. Their frequency range - 10 Hz - 25 kHz, and the level of noise reduction - up to 30 dB, depending on the mode.

This year, Audio Technica also introduced the IM series. It includes six models: four with a balanced anchor (one, two, three and four drivers) and two with two 8.8 mm dynamic drivers.
