Canary: smart home security system

There are a huge number of home security systems, there are advanced systems, there are very advanced ones, and there are simple and very simple ones.

The Canary system stands out from a number of its own kind, primarily because it can really be called “smart” - it reacts not only to various kinds of events, such as opening / closing doors, but also to unusual signals, for example, an unusual time of opening the door to an apartment.

Design and configuration

The system looks very simple, but inside there are a lot of all sorts of elements, subsystems and nodes:

• HD camera (720p) with night vision and 170 degree wide-angle lens;
• Wi-Fi module;
• High quality microphone and speaker;
• Siren;
• RGB LEDs;
• 3-axis accelerometer;
• Motion sensor (passive infrared);
• Temperature sensor;
• Humidity sensor;
• Air quality sensor.

According to the developers, one Canary unit should be enough for reliable monitoring of the apartment. But you can install a few blocks, if the apartment is large, or you live in a house.

Functionality and features

This device is mounted either on the wall / ceiling, or installed on any horizontal surface. Of course, it is better to place the device somewhere in the center, and not on the loggia / basement :)

Device setup is simple. You need to turn on the device, connect it to your home Wi-Fi network, and register in the Canary Cloud service by downloading the corresponding application on your smartphone.

Of course, for the normal operation of the device requires a Wi-Fi network, and a smartphone with iOS or Android.



Since the device is equipped with a motion sensor, it can respond to the appearance of a moving object in the "field of view" by sending a corresponding notification. At the same time, Canary “learns” and is able to distinguish the movement of an object the size of a cat, from the movement of an object the size of an adult.



And even the owner of the device can distinguish, according to different parameters, so that, going at night to drink some water, you will not receive a signal to the smartphone and a siren signal.

Over time, Canary remembers when you come home, how you usually behave at home, what your habits are (well, for example, at 17.00 you go to smoke on the balcony) and other details. All this can significantly reduce the number of false positives of the system.



Canary can detect movement, changes in temperature and humidity, opening and closing doors and other things.

Remote control

Having installed the corresponding application on your smartphone, you can connect to Canary remotely. For example, having received a notification about elevated temperature on a smartphone, you can connect to the device's camera to see what is happening. Of course, if the house is on fire and the Wi-Fi router has already burned down, it will not be possible to connect, but Canary warns of such things long before the event has passed into the fatal phase.

If communication is lost with the device, a notification will be sent to the smartphone.

Canary Cloud service

The developers have created the Canary Cloud service, which is the “brain” of the device, this is where the data received by the device is processed. The device has internal memory, but it is not enough, and it is intended for buffering data when transferring data to the Canary Cloud.

According to the developers, when connecting to the Canary / service is performed over SSL (HTTPS). Video and audio, when loaded onto a service, are encrypted with an AES-256 key.

Third-party repositories / FTP are not supported.
