Sounds of venus

The pictures of other planets have already become familiar. Without any problems, you can find black and white, color, panoramic and even stereo images. But if someone wants not to see, but to hear other planets, he will be in for a big disappointment. Very, very few stations were equipped with microphones and transmitted sounds from other planets.

At the same time, the first interplanetary stations that tried to solve this problem were the Soviet stations Venera-13/14 launched more than 30 years ago. Then this achievement went almost unnoticed. Why? Maybe because then the possibilities for distribution of the multimedia kit were much less. Very, very few magazines had an additional record on their kit. Also, perhaps, the fact was that they did not transmit the sound in the literal sense of the word.

The fact is that the transfer rate from the surface of Venus was not great then, but some kind of compression was used very rarely.

For example, these two black and white panoramas were transmitted 13 minutes 10 seconds. The total resolution of one panorama is 1000x211 pixels, 512 grayscale

In contrast to the panorama, you need to transmit the change of sound in real time. And the required traffic for this could not be put in the actual transfer rate. After all, in addition to sound, it was necessary to transfer data from other experiments. As a result, the sound itself was not transmitted, but the volume level at the moment. The sound, according to the authors of the experiment, was white noise.

The result, at that time, was an article assessing the wind speed in the atmosphere of Venus. Anyone can read it here.

Now it's much easier to distribute audio. As a result, when a synthesized sound recording from Venus came into my hands, I decided to put it on the chart from the original article and sign the sounds that I was able to determine. A perfect match could not be achieved, but the picture complements the sound well.

Few comments.
Telephotometers - devices for receiving continuous panoramas from the surface. An example of these panoramas is slightly higher.

PROP-V - a device for measuring the physical and mechanical properties of the soil. Ironically, when deployed, instead of Venus, he got on the dropped cover of the telephotometer. All this is clearly visible on the panorama. You can read about it in this article.

Surface drilling is well described here:
