Functional and economic comparison of Russian cloud service providers. Version 2.0

Just over a year ago, I published a comparison of Russian cloud operators : I liked the article a lot and was helpful. About six months later, I began to receive a lot of feedback and requests that it would be nice to make a new review, updating the price data, adding additional services to the request and adding new companies to it. This time, the comparison included already 34 companies (last year there were more than 2 times less), including the foreign services Amazon and Rackspace, and the collection of information took more than two months.



As was the last time, a certain updated configuration of resources and services was chosen, also for a change and at the request of the workers, I added a number of new questions. Since I had experience in a company that provides integrated IT outsourcing services, the requested configuration was chosen based on the most popular services.

The review included 34 companies:

In order to understand the technical implementation, the candidates were asked 26 questions:

  1. Used hypervisors?
  2. What processors and servers are used? The name of the manufacturer and the series.
  3. What storage system is used? Manufacturer, model?
  4. What is the level of TIER data center?
  5. What is data center? Where is it located?
  6. The possibility of placing on 2 sites? Possibility of accommodation abroad?
  7. The ability to use hardware VPN, which model?
  8. Is it possible to organize L2 junction with its internal addressing on MMTS-9 / MMTS-10? Cost?
  9. Possibility of hourly billing? (Does the price change from this?)
  10. The possibility of postpay?
  11. The ability to use the built-in backup functionality? Cost?
  12. What SLA at no extra cost do you provide?
  13. The ability to automatically restore the virtual machine (on another server) in case of a crash? In what time?
  14. What is the guarantee of resources CPU, RAM, HDD, Network?
  15. What is included in the basic support? What channel for communication and at what time is possible?
  16. Do Microsoft licenses come with or without VAT?
  17. AS number, from which IP in the Internet stand out?
  18. Is 24x7 support free?
  19. Ability to place on disks of different speeds and cost for 1Gb?
  20. How many controllers have storage systems?
  21. What is the access protocol from the storage system to the servers?
  22. Whether staffing technologies like VMware High Availability are applied (automatic restart in case of server failure, ~ 5-10 minutes to start the virtual machine)
  23. How many telecom operators are used for fault tolerance AS?
  24. Have a test access? Many days?
  25. How soon is it possible to provide test access?
  26. Is it possible to test access to the resources requested above?

Evaluation


The emphasis was placed on the complexity of providing services (the principle of one window) to cover the tasks of an average company in which the main operating system is Windows.

The evaluation was based on the number of pluses and the total cost. As a rule, it is most convenient for the customer to order services and work with one performer, therefore companies that did not have the requested services received a minus.

Since some retired candidates provided answers to requests, I decided to leave them in comparative tables and marked them with a red marker for rejected candidates at the selection stage.

Communication and reaction speed


During the collection of information, 477 letters were sent and 414 were received. 275 calls were made. Yes, besides the mail I had to talk a lot over the phone, but in my opinion it was worth it

In most companies, the response to the request was followed within a few hours, for the rest of the companies it took 1 day or more. The longest answer is from M1Cloud, because the manager went on vacation and lost my application :)
The average time of the offer for 2-3 days. Megafon and e-Style Telecom were the longest.

Most companies offer VMware as their primary virtualization platform. I am glad that there are operators offering more than 1 platform.
A decent percentage of companies that have indicated the name of the equipment used, use the blade server. The equipment is not cheap, so they do not save on quality.

Overwhelmingly, the operators indicated the level of reliability of TIER-3 data centers, but it is important to understand that this is actually a TIER-3 compliment, that is, the data center corresponds to TIER-3, but for some reason (for example, for financial reasons ) did not pass his certification in the Uptime Institute.

Most operators using a data storage system (DSS) have basically 2 storage controllers, only a small part of 3 or more.
Among the 50% of operators that use storage, the leader is solutions from NetApp.
Despite the fact that some companies answered “yes” to the question: “whether technologies like VMware High Availability are routinely used”, however, there are clear doubts about the implementation of “high availability” without using storage.

During the audit of autonomous systems of operators, it turned out that the number of telecom operators used for fault tolerance by AS is greatly overestimated :)

Cloudscap and ActiveCloud has its AS, but also tied to Dataline, since for them it is the only operator.
To judge the honesty of the answers of companies to judge you, the pros and cons for it were not placed. But such an explicit and implicit dependence on a single operator is not a positive factor.

Of those who answered, the highest price tag for drives (in this case, SSD) from provider Cloud4y, 71 rubles, to the question why it is so expensive, was justified by providing SSD based on NetApp, and there it is expensive. At the same time, the cost of other drives on Cloud4y is generally lower than others.
Perhaps it will be interesting to someone: about 40% of the polled operators supply Microsoft licenses without VAT, which is a problem for most Russian companies that work with VAT and expect to receive VAT deductions. Thus, the customer is deprived of the opportunity to receive VAT deduction.

The financial side of the issue


I left the most interesting for dessert. Not all companies were able to offer a full package of services, therefore, apart from the final cost of services, I indicated in the comments which services are not provided / provided.
In addition, I drew attention to the currency specified in the KP (not all turned out to be rubles), and also included VAT or not. And one more important moment - I indicated one-time payments, which the company requires for installation services, organization of snapshots, setting up services and infrastructure, etc.

The total cost, which is listed in the table is different from the base, I had to put a lot of effort to break through the maximum discount for each operator, although it was not easy and required more than one iteration.
There were various arguments, requests and even threats;)
On average, the size of the discount on resources (CPU, RAM, HDD) is -12-15%, for other services - 10%.
