Jimdo - to everyone on the web page, for free!

With the help of the Jimdo service you can easily create your own pages on the Internet without special HTML knowledge , while having some basic functionality - changing the design, structure of the site and its content, inserting photos, videos and RSS. Please note - absolutely free !



The authors of the project admit that they did not come to the current state of affairs by accident. As far as I understood, they gathered somewhere around 3 years ago and developed the Online-Software engine (CMS), which is now the core of Jimdo. The guys got to their present office in Hamburg thanks to a business competition, where they won 18 thousand euros - a good start :) According to the site, the team now consists of the three founders Christian (25), Fridtjof (24), Matthias (30) and 6 employees , although in one of the sections I saw much more photos of their workers. According to the stories of the authors of the project, over time, more and more people / acquaintances / friends turned to them with requests to use the system for their own needs. In consequence of this, the creators of CMS decided to make it publicly available, as their slogan, Pages for the People , now says to the people - pages to the people (almost like land to the peasants :).

In general, if you want to create a simple (or not) website, your real (!) Business card on the Internet with more than just your full name + contact phone number, you can easily do this on Jimdo . I repeat that knowledge of HTML is not required at all. And the fact that from January 30, 2008, the Russian version of the system finally saw the light, makes it even closer and more accessible to "us." The site has a small tour of the service , I suggest that you familiarize yourself with it and consider the possibilities of the project in a little more detail. So, the use of this system allows:

1. Get after registration a page named username.jimdo.com .
2. Create your own gallery (with Lightbox effect).

1. Post “downloads” for your visitors to download.

1. Use the wide possibilities for editing the design - changing the background, alignment, the location of the site blocks, the image in the header. In addition to uploading your own pictures, there is a fairly impressive default database. There is access to editing HTML, CSS codes of the template.

1. Use on your site insert from Flickr, Youtube, del.icio.us, RSS feeds.
2. Close the page with a password.
3. Manage your newsletter / newsletter with your friends, colleagues and loved ones.
4. Use sitemap / page for printing.
5. Use the guestbook / forms on your website.
6. View statistics.
7. Use 500MB of free space (somewhere 12.500 photos).

In Jimdo, as in other similar "free" services, there are additional features ( PRO-functions ) that are available after paying a small sum of money. In this case, it is:

1. Own domain (.com, .de, .info, .org, .net, .biz, .cn ...)
2. Own e-mail address (including POP3 and IMAP, Webmail, Spam protection, virus protection and Autoresponder).
3. Detailed statistics.
4. 5 GB of free space (already 125.000 photos).
5. The lack of advertising (2 text links, as I understand it, advertising the service itself).

All the listed benefits are available to everyone for 5 euros per month (the price already includes VAT, 19%). Agree, for a separate domain, hosting and quite functional admin panel is just a ridiculous price.

And the last thing I wanted to say is what started it all, namely the recently introduced Social-Network functions. Now you can also:

• Make friends with other Jimdo users.
• Send messages to your Jimdo friends.
• Use Newsfeed to inform your friends and visitors about changes on your page.

Most of the information was gathered directly from the official Jimdo website. In principle, it is enough, but as shown by practical research, the capabilities of the system are much wider and brighter! The results of the analysis occupy a lot of space for the text and screenshots, therefore, made in my personal blog (for those who are too lazy to register in Jimdo).
