The Ministry of Industry and Trade orders the development of a domestic processor

According to the Kommersant publication, the Ministry of Industry and Trade ordered the development of a new domestic processor called Baikal, which, according to the ministry’s understanding, should reduce the dependence of Russian state structures on Intel and AMD products.

Unlike the already existing domestic Elbrus processors, the Baikal specifications look quite modern: the processor, which should be released in 2015, should be manufactured in 28 nm topology, have 8 cores, a clock frequency of 2 GHz and ... built on arm cores Cortex A-57. Accordingly, the processor is not intended for workstations (hence the apparent contradiction of the initial idea of the Ministry of Industry and Trade on leaving Intel and AMD), but will be used in switches, routers, and in a vague “computing technology”. The operating system is of course Linux. And in 2016, we should already expect a 16 core processor using a 16 nm process technology.

The order already has a contractor - it is the company “Baikal Electronics”, a daughter specializing in the development of supercomputers of the company “T-Platforms”. Actually on T-Platforms together with Rosnano the financing of the project was laid down. The current budget of the project is 1.2 billion rubles, the only thing is that there is enough of this amount there are big doubts.
It is not yet clear whether the processor will be manufactured in Russia, since we do not have production lines with a 28 nm process technology. By the way, until the end of last year, T-Platforms were included in the list of organizations that banned the export of element base from the United States, as a company operating contrary to US national security. Now the restriction is removed. In summary, the project is similar to another cut of money with the purchase of ready-made solutions from abroad.

UPD. I changed the wording of the survey, it really was too biased. I apologize if I jarred someone,
