How does it feel to live in a star cluster?

Thirty thousand bright suns shone with tremendous soul splendor, even colder and more terrifying in its terrible indifference than the brutal wind that penetrated the cold, ugly gloomy world.

Our planet is on the periphery of the Milky Way, in a place that is not yet a stellar vacuum, so to speak, but the concentration of the stars is very low. As a result, to the nearest star from us is a few light years, and in the night sky you can count no more than 6 thousand stars (in any of the hemispheres).

But there are places where the stars are much, much more. These are star clusters, or clusters. What if our Sun were in such a cluster? Then our sky would look very unusual (for the present of us, of course). A team of astronomers working with Astronomy Magazine decided to show what it could be like to live on a planet whose system is inside a star cluster.

As an example, Tukan 47 (NGC 104) has been selected. From us, this cluster is located 17 thousand light years, and its diameter is only 120 light years (at that time, the diameter of galaxies is many thousands of light years).

In the cluster 47 Tukana - 570 thousand stars, and all of them are in relative proximity from each other. Probably, some of these stars have planets, and here is a model of a view of the sky from one of these planets. In this cluster, our planet would be surrounded by several hundred stars, per square light year (several thousand stars per square parsec). This is several thousand times higher stellar density than in our location. The average distance from the star to the star in this case would be 0.05 light years.

According to experts, from such a planet one can see more than 130 thousand luminaries illuminating the planet 20 times brighter than the moon illuminates our Earth at night.

By the way, while still a teenager, I read the story of Azimov " And the darkness came ." In this work, the life of civilization on one of the planets of such a cluster is played up in a very interesting way. The epigraph, by the way, is taken precisely from this work.
