25-dollar smartphones with Firefox OS will appear already this year

True, so far only in India and Indonesia. This was announced by the head of Mozilla Corp., adding a few details about the devices, which should soon go on sale.

Previously, the company has already announced its intention to release 25-dollar smartphones in developing (and not only countries). But the reality turned out to be somewhat different, and the cost of equipment / assembly raised the price bar to $ 60. And this is too expensive for emerging markets, where Firefox OS smartphones were planned for sale.

60-dollar smartphones went on sale, but the company did not abandon the idea to release 25-dollar gadgets. To reduce the cost of devices, it was decided to conclude a contract with the Chinese company Spreadtrum Communications Inc.

This company produces very inexpensive chipsets, which will serve as the basis for low-cost Mozilla smartphones. From such smartphones it is difficult to expect the possibility of launching productive applications, but the main functions of the device will perform.

Mozilla management hopes that the release of 25-dollar smartphones will help bring the total number of devices based on Firefox OS to 10 million in the next 12 months. Now the number of such devices is about a million, which is also quite a lot.

The Firefox management states that it is considering the option of releasing its smartphones in China, but there, as you know, there is a huge amount of budget devices on Android, which are a serious competitor to Firefox-smartphones. So China is a long-term goal for now.
