NASA Announces Mars Design Competition

One of the projects submitted to the competition

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), together with the manufacturer of 3D printers MakerBot, have announced a competition for the Mars Base Challenge Mars base projects. Any user of the Thingiverse website can take part in the competition, regardless of their place of residence or education.

The winners will be determined by a jury composed of JPL and MakerBot employees, in accordance with the criteria: scientific feasibility, creative value and technical ability to print the base. It is probably assumed that the base will be printed on 3D printers.

Projects for participation in the competition are accepted until June 12. To receive the prize, participants must be over 12 years old. The winner will receive a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D printer and three MakerBot Filament plastic coils. For the second place - two plastic coils, for the third - one.

All participants must publish the design base in the appropriate section of the directory Thingiverse. The competition started on May 30, now there are about 80 works. Below are some of the latest projects.

Of course, NASA does not promise that it will build a base precisely for the design that will win the competition. Rather, it is a project to popularize science and to prepare society for the fact that it will soon have to populate the second planet. By the way, on Mars, perhaps, there are caves up to 100 meters in depth , so it is logical to populate the first settlers there, because this is a natural defense against micrometeorites and solar radiation.
