Verisign has published another statistical report on domain names and the number of new registrations (
PDF ). As of October 1, 2006, there were 112 million domains in the TLD zones on the Internet. This is 30% more than a year ago. The DNS system processes an average of 21 billion queries daily for .com and .net.
During the III quarter. In 2006, over 9.4 million new domains were registered. This, however, is 14% less than in the second quarter. The decline occurred in national ccTLDs, which may be due to the emergence of a single European zone .eu.
The .ru national zone is still one of the most rapidly progressing. Experts note that of all large ccTLDs, double-digit growth (as a percentage) from quarter to quarter is noticeable only in five national domains, among which are .at (Austria), .es (Spain), .fr (France), .ru (Russia ) and .us (United States).

Experts notice another interesting tendency: many domain registrars have begun
active marketing among bloggers and podcasters , urging them to get their own name. Registrars spend millions of dollars on advertising and even open their own blogs for propaganda purposes. The share of individuals among the owners of domain registrations for the year increased from 25% to 30% and continues to grow.
