We continue to acquaint you with the equipment as it is: large, from all sides and without a wrapper.
In this article, we will take a detailed look at the representative of block
storage systems NetApp E2700 , who came to us a week ago for testing. The main areas of application of these systems are: full motion video, media content, seismic data processing, video surveillance, high-performance computing clusters (HPC), D2D backup, geological exploration, etc.

Vendor words
As they say, no one will say better about the product than the PR of its vendor :-) We quote several key proposals from a single NetApp brochure about the new E2700 series.
“NetApp E2700 storage is a simple storage solution for SAN environments. It seamlessly integrates into virtually any application-based storage environment, offers many options for hosting connectivity, and supports various types of disks and storage shelves.
High IOPS and bandwidth allow you to optimize the level of performance without complicating the infrastructure and increasing the cost of maintenance, power and the acquisition of additional disk space.
The E2700's intuitive interface simplifies installation and maintenance, and also provides access to all enterprise-class features that provide consistent performance, data integrity and security. ”
Quite a lot of flattering words, and I agree with them.
We open the box
The E2700 series of products includes 3 models: E2712, E2724 and E2760. The last two digits (12, 24 and 60) indicate the number of disks in the basket. This time
we got the model NetApp E2724 with 24 disks, respectively.
The height is 2 units, the size and weight of the quote in the official website.
Dimensions and weight | System Switch E2760 Expansion Shelf DE6600 | E2724 System Switch Expansion Shelf DE5600 | E2712 System Switch Expansion Shelf DE1600 |
---|
Height | 7.0 "(17.78 cm) | 3.47 "(8.81 cm) | 3.4 "(8.64 cm) |
Width | 19 "(48.26 cm) | 19 "(48.26 cm) | 19 "(48.26 cm) |
Depth | 32.5 "(82.55 cm) | 19.6 "(49.78 cm) | 21.75 "(55.25 cm) |
Weight (max.) | 232 pounds (105.2 kg) | 57.32 lbs (26 kg) | 59.52 lbs (27 kg) |
Actually, that's what came:

A box of rather small size, weighing 26 kg, do not look at 110 kg on a box - this is bullying :-) We open the box. Unlike the disks that NetApp sends in giant boxes with lots of foam, everything looks modest. Saved space even with rails, compactly placing them in the grooves of the package. Pretty practical.
This is how the rails and their mount look:

As without documentation? "Quick start guide" and "Safety Notice" at your request! Side caps and console cable with mini-USB connector in the same package.

Appearance and dimensions
Let's get rid of polyethylene and cardboard.

Consider in detail the rear view.
Four FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) - easily replaceable modules that support “hot” replacement in case of failure, are grouped in pairs: 2 storage controllers and 2 power supplies. Controllers on top :-)

Replaced quite easily and quickly.

E2700 controllers are equipped with SAS 12Gb / s ports in the base, and support expansion with Host Interface Cards (HIC) with FC 16G, iSCSI 10G ports, as well as additional SAS 12G ports.
"What is" from left to right:
- Dual Ethernet Management Ports
- 12 Gb SAS Host Interface Ports
- USB - Factory Use Only
- Serial Port (Mini-USB)
- 6 Gb SAS Disk Expansion Ports

Having taken out the controller, we will look inside. The lid opens from the bottom, so we need to turn it over.

Inside we find:
- Controller Processor LSI SAS 3108 (“Invader”) dual-core ROC
- Controller Flash 32GB for SANtricity OS and cache offload (two 16 GB mSATA modules)
- Controller Memory 8 GB
- Controller Battery - I took it out, because could not resist the blue lock.
By the way, if you see blue plastic mounts, then this module is easily replaceable.
The E2700 series supports the ability to combine different types of disks in one storage system (SAS, NL-SAS and SSD). You can increase storage volumes using disk shelves for 12, 24 and 60 disks. In addition, a maximum of 7 shelves can be connected to the E2724.
The maximum number of disks is up to 192 pieces with expansion shelves and 120 solid-state drives with expansion modules for 24 drives.
The maximum “raw” capacity is 28.8TB, with the possibility of expansion - up to 700.8TB (168 disks with a capacity of 4TB in additional shelves + 24 disks of 1.2TB in a basket with controllers).

The 12-disk shelf is ideal for organizations with a limited budget that require productive and at the same time capacious drives. A 24-disk shelf allows for maximum performance per unit while reducing power consumption to a minimum. A 60-disk shelf increases storage density and allows you to store up to 240 TB of data in 4U racks, which is especially important for environments with a high need for disk space.
Supported disk shelf expansion:
- DE6600 (4U, 60 disks): 2.5 "10,000 rpm SAS 1.2 TB / 900 GB / 600 GB (with full encryption / with incomplete encryption); 3.5" 7200 rpm 4/3 / 2 TB (with full encryption / incomplete encryption); 800GB SSD drives
- DE5600 (2U, 24 disks): 2.5 "10,000 rpm SAS 1.2 TB / 900 GB / 600 GB; 800GB SSD drives
- DE1600 (2U, 12 disks): 7200 rpm SAS 4/3/2 TB
Since the system was taken for a test, we were not interested in the volumes, so our array is equipped with SAS disks of 600 GB.

Carefully collect everything back, put in a rack and begin to prepare for testing.
Approximately 2 more weeks this storage system will be with us in the test. After that, we plan to publish a post with its results. After which you will have the opportunity to test the storage system personally. Leave
applications for testing .
PS A distinctive feature of this model is a lower cost per terabyte of storage space. View
special pricing for the purchase of NetApp E2700. By the way, for the first time, NetApp allowed them to be published!
