Robot Canadarm2 on the ISS "operated on" itself

A significant event happened the other day - a complex manipulator system Canadarm2 performed an operation to replace its own cameras. This operation was performed for the first time, without the participation of astronauts. Usually the team of astronauts goes into space to repair something on the ISS.

Now the people on the ISS (and in the MCC) just watched the repair. Of course, the operator controlled the manipulator, until the appearance of self-repairing robots, which themselves determine what and how to do, is still far away. But there was no physical contact between the person and the car.

So, the repair itself consisted in replacing two cameras that had failed. One camera, located at the base of the manipulator, broke down in 2012, and it was removed by astronauts. A little later, the second camera (it is located at the top of the system), which can be called critical, began to give a not very high-quality “picture”. As a result, it was decided to install a “swindling” camera instead of the first one, which was absent. A critical camera is replaced with a completely new one.

The cameras are rather big, each of them has the dimensions of a CRT monitor. At the same time cameras are mounted not in the same way as LEGO parts. To replace the robot, it was necessary to unscrew the bolt, install the camera, make sure that the camera was installed normally, tighten the bolt.

The manipulator took out the camera independently from the Kibo gateway, people did not go out into space, as mentioned above.

Here is a video of the whole process (this is computer animation, a realistic video model), stung to one and a half minutes:
