Wordpress 2.5: Design Redesign

Just the other day an event should take place, which many bloggers have been waiting for a long time - Wordpress will be updated to version 2.5. The last major update - version 2.3 - was released on September 24, 2007, that is, the developer community had six months to add new features and improve the work of the old ones, and it seems to me that they didn’t lose this time in vain.

While Wordpress 2.5 is in the RC2 stage and may contain errors, it is not recommended to install it on working blogs, but it’s not long to wait for the final version. This article is devoted to changes in the design of the Wordpress admin panel in version 2.5 compared to version 2.3, in the next posts we will talk about its technical changes.

Overall impression

Wordpress admin panel changed the design and began to look more stylish - it was not for nothing that her designer was involved in such a famous person as Jeffrey Zeldman (to be fair, I said that Jason Santa Maria and Liz Danzico worked with him). Different blue gradations were replaced by very nice blue, gray and orange colors, the buttons and shapes were rounded, and the font became larger.

It looks like wordpress.org will also change the design soon, compare the Wordpress logo on the site and when entering the admin panel in the new version:

The main menu has undergone minor changes: the Blogroll button moved to the Manage section, Presentation was renamed Design, and Options was changed to Settings. There was a link to the Wordpress Codex and support forum . When new comments to your posts appear, their number will be displayed in a circle above the Comments line.

Dashboard

Dashboard has become more functional and understandable. Links to writing a new post and editing the topic have been before, but now they are more visible, and Wordpress news has moved to the bottom of the page. A block appeared that displays the most popular, the newest and just updated plugins - I think it will be useful for novice bloggers who have not yet figured out what plugins they need.

Also on the Dashboard displays the number of written posts, pages and drafts, as well as categories and tags.

Very conveniently located blocks of Recent Comments (recent comments) and Incoming Links (links to your blog). Large screenshot - click on small:

Write

The section in which you write posts and create pages has undergone very strong changes. Previously, almost all post settings (categories, permission of comments and pingbacks, password or status) were to the right of the text entry field. Now only post status is located on the left: unpublished, published, editing is necessary. All other settings are below the text entry field.

It is very convenient to work with tags - they are added not by a comma, but by pressing Enter after entering each of them, after which they can be deleted by clicking the cross next to each of them.

Manage

In the Manage section, you can now edit tags - rename and assign them the correct slug (name in the link).

Design

Here the most interesting thing is working with widgets (screenshot is clickable):

Now the widgets do not need to drag to the sidebar, and each of them has a description. You also do not need to choose how many text and RSS widgets you need - just click Add and add the necessary amount.

In the following article I will talk about the technical innovations of Wordpress 2.5: support for Gravatar, a built-in gallery for photos and pictures, update of plug-ins with one click and a very convenient loader for any media files.
