Self-organizing robots to create pieces of furniture

Researchers from the Swiss State Institute of Technology have created an unexpected solution for those who live in small apartments and lack free space. Cube-shaped Roombots robots (side length 21.6 cm) can independently assemble into various three-dimensional structures, including chairs and tables. The authors believe that their invention is suitable for private homes and conference rooms, as well as for people with disabilities who are difficult to manage with furniture.

Simply select the program you want, and the robots will do the rest themselves. They cling to each other with small hooks, which makes it possible to create rather large structures. Each robot consists of two halves, which rotate relative to each other. It even allows them to act like a wheel. It is able to attach and move other objects or pieces of furniture.

Now the authors are working on improving the software, increasing the speed of work and optimizing the interaction of people with robots.
