NASA will launch the "flying saucer" on June 3

NASA has announced testing of a fundamentally new aircraft, which the agency plans to operate to deliver astronauts and payloads to the surface of Mars with a payload.

The device, called Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (aerodynamic inflatable retarder supersonic speed or abbreviated LDSD , want to use to land astronauts with a payload on the surface of Mars. The US agency believes that due to "breakthrough technologies" the moderator can perform a successful landing in a discharged condition the atmosphere of the planet.

At the moment, NASA has two such devices. They are saucer-shaped, have an inflatable device and a parachute. The diameter of one of them is 6 meters, the second - 8 meters. The agency expects that the device of smaller diameter will deliver "space trucks", and the eight-meter one - manned spacecraft.

The first LDSD test will take place on June 3 and will consist in the fact that the vehicle will deliver a conditional vehicle to an altitude of 36.5 km and then rise to 54.8 km. There he will test two innovative technologies and develop a speed 3.5 times faster than the speed of sound. Tests can be viewed on the NASA website.

The agency said that its experts doubt the success of the test, but in any case they will test two more similar devices in the summer of next year.
