Yahoo! buys instant messaging messenger Blink

It seems that the lot of each more or less successful independent mobile messenger is to be bought by a large company. Whatsapp has already come under the control of Facebook, Viber was bought by the Japanese Rakuten, and just a day ago it became known that the “secret” messenger Blink attracted Yahoo!

Blink is a development of Meh Labs, which was founded by people from Google Kevin Stephens (Kevin Stephens) and Michelle Norgan (Michelle Norgan). At first, Meh Labs was engaged in Kismet's LBS service, but then switched to Blink mobile messenger. The program allows you to exchange messages, photos and videos that will be visible to the recipient only for a short period of time, after which they self-delete.

The official release of Blink took place in April last year, in September version 2.0 for iOS was released. At the beginning of the year, the messenger appeared on Google Play. According to Google’s application directory, the number of installations on Android devices is between 10,000 and 50,000. For comparison, Blink’s main and most powerful competitor, the “secret” instant messenger, Snapchat, has already completed 50,000,000 installations.

Regarding the statistics of users Blink interesting more. Only half of the audience of the messenger accounted for the USA, while the Middle East was Blink's market number 2. How can we not recall the common opinion that Facebook bought Whatsapp, especially popular in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Australia, in order to “convert” new users - to connect them to the social network, thereby significantly increasing the subscriber base. Of course, Yahoo! - not Facebook, but there is no doubt that the experience of Blink's popularity among users in the Middle East will be taken into account and implemented in future Yahoo!

Yahoo! did not disclose the amount of purchase Blink. According to rumors, both versions of the application will be closed, seven employees of Meh Labs, who worked on the project, will go to work at the headquarters of Yahoo! to work on smart communication products. Obviously, paying for Blink, Yahoo! I invested not in the application (it will cease to exist in a couple of weeks), but in the people behind the project.

Since in 2012, Yahoo! led by Merissa Mayer, the Internet giant has already bought about 40 (!) small and relatively small startups. Many see this as a wish for Yahoo! strengthen its presence in the mobile segment, which is becoming an increasingly important source of income.

Will the projects independent of the giants remain on the market, or is this fate inevitable for everyone ...
