Silent Notebook Cooler

Thorrn Micro Technologies has published information about its new development - a new type of cooler, in which there is no fan as such. The "cooler" RSD5 is designed primarily for portable devices and has no moving components, which makes it completely silent.

To generate air flow, this cooling system, which is four times smaller than standard coolers and three times more powerful than them, uses electricity (technology is somewhat similar to that used in air ionizers). This makes it possible to create a stream of air moving at a speed of up to 2.7 meters per second, whereas standard coolers for mobile devices are capable of much less — from 0.7 to 1.7 meters per second. The finished RSD5 prototype can cool 25-watt processors without any problems.

Developers are planning to further improve their cooling system in order to embed RSD5 directly into the chip. That will give the opportunity to create self-cooling chips.
