Oracle has won a key case against Google. The US Court of Appeals ruled that Oracle holds the copyright in parts of the Java programming language used by Google in developing the Android OS. "We concluded that a set of commands forcing a computer to perform the desired operations may contain expressions subject to copyright," says federal district judge Kathleen O'Malley.
In 2010, Oracle sued Google for copyright infringement on Java for Android. Oracle estimated the damage at one billion dollars.
Oracle is extremely satisfied: "The decision of the federal district is a big victory for Oracle and the entire software industry, dictated by copyright protection to stimulate innovation and confidence that developers will be rewarded for their achievements."
