The future of Unreal Tournament starts today: open source, free and cross-platform
Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we (Epic - translator’s note) are pleased to announce that we will work on it together - along with you. We know fans love Unreal Tournament as much as we do. We know that you have interesting ideas and sound opinions about the direction in which the development of UT should go, and what should be present in the new game. So let's take a chance and create this game together, openly and for everyone.
Here is the plan:
We have created a small team of UT veterans, who are starting to work on the project today.
From the first line of code, from the first concept art, from the first design solution, the development will be conducted openly in the form of cooperation between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We will use discussion forums and the Twitch stream for regular progress reports.
If you are a willing to participate fan, all you need is to create a free account on the forum and join the discussion.
All the code and content of the game will be available for UE4 developers on GitHub (I don’t really understand if those who are developing on UE4, but it sounds cool anyway).
The game will be true to its roots in competitive FPS.
Development will focus on Windows, Mac and Linux .
What is special about it? ')
It will take months before you can play in UT4 - this is a real development from scratch.
When the game is ready, it will be free. Not free to play, but it is free (given the twofold interpretation of the word free, the emphasis on it and what was said earlier, we can also expect that the game will be free ).
We will create a market in which developers, modders, artists and players will be able to distribute, buy and sell fashion and game content. Revenues from the market will be divided between the seller and Epic. That is how we plan to make money on UT4.
Much of what's described for Epic is new, and we still haven't really figured it all out. From time to time something may go wrong, and to deal with the problems, we will work on them together. It will be necessary to take a lot of difficult decisions, and not all of the proposed ideas will be implemented in the game. But if you are a UT fan, a UE4 developer, a future modder, or just a person who is interested in how we create games, we hope that you will join. It will be fun.

If you want to play the classic versions of Unreal Tournament, they are waiting for you here(unfortunately, no versions for Linux, although they exist in nature) .
Also recall that recently support for Linux has been added to the Unreal Engine.
