Just a few months after the
start of beta testing of the Atom text editor, GitHub announced that it makes the entire project (and therefore its source code) open and accessible to everyone.
The GitHub team began working on the Atom editor six years ago, but its most active development was in the last two and a half years. The goal of the project was to create an editor that they will use for the rest of their lives.
Now the editor is available only for OS X, but the company is working on versions for Linux and Windows. It is based on the Chromium browser, so it fully utilizes all modern web technologies, functioning as a usual, familiar to any user, application.
GitHub has already opened the codes of a huge number of packages and libraries for Atom, but now the source code of the main application, its package manager and the framework are presented to everyone. And all this under the MIT, which will certainly help the development of the project.

Every programmer (like all of us on GitHub) would like to use open source applications. In this case, their work is transparent, and we can be sure that they will work exactly as we need ... For any product, it is only better if a huge community works on it.
- Nathan Sobo, Atom developer
Atom will be developed as a separate product from GitHub, however, in the future we can expect their tight integration with each other.
“We are now focused on creating something amazing, and the money has been left in the background. We will take care of the money later "
