Extra-Terrestrial Excavations

The Extra-Terrestrial game, released in 1982 by Atari for its own Atari 2600 console, is recognized as one of the worst games in history. According to the legends, it was decided to dig all unclaimed copies of this product. All data associated with this action was hidden.

This week, thanks to excavations conducted by Microsoft and its Xbox Live division, burial has ceased to be a legend. The first photo with cartridges extracted from the ground was published in its microblog by Xbox Live program director Larry Hryb. A few more shots of the surviving copies appeared in the official blog of Xbox Wire. Excavations are carried out by Microsoft in the framework of the documentary project “Atari: Game Over” - upon completion of which the company will present a documentary film about the aforementioned financial disaster.

Now YouTube has been filled with many different videos from the excavation site. Xbox Live also presented its video from the scene:

The game is based on the Steven Spielberg film Alien, and Atari, relying on the popularity of the film, did not attach sufficient importance to the development of its product. Because of the protracted negotiations regarding the licensing of the game to develop the game, there were only six weeks left, and the marketing company as such was not conducted at all.

Despite the fact that the company managed to realize 1.5 million copies of the game, it was possible to get revenue from only 500 thousand copies from the total of four million copies. Total losses of the company, mainly due to the high cost of the license, amounted to $ 536 million.
