Programmer "Seryozhkin" "hacked" Google Earth

The Seryozhkin programmer tried to create an open and expandable alternative to the Google Earth online service and presented the gaia project to the critics.

The product, the first mentions of which are dated May of this year, works with Linux, * BSD and MacOSX operating systems, but Windows, the author says, is not fully supported yet. The newest version of gaia, released earlier this month, boasts GPS compatibility and improved navigation, as well as the ability to display the globe in three-dimensional mode.

Google Earth, by the way, already has one open alternative - NASA World Wind, which ironically works only under Windows.
