Google is not allowed into the wireless market

On Friday morning, Moscow time, the final results of the auction, held on March 18 by the Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ) for distributing licenses to operate in the so-called “700 MHz band” (698-806 MHz) in the United States, became known. A total of 1,099 licenses were offered, divided into 5 blocks - A, B, C, D and E, with differences in channel bandwidth and licensing conditions. As we have already reported , 1,091 licenses were redeemed for a total of almost $ 20 billion. This was a record amount from the sale of the broadcast, received by the state in the entire history of the United States.

The auction winner was the telecommunications giant Verizon, which bought out almost the entire C block and a significant portion of the other blocks. In total, the company spent $ 9.63 billion on acquisitions. Let me remind you that Block C is also important from an ideological point of view - Google’s efforts have developed specific rules for it, according to which any device can work in it without having to certify them with the license holder.

The second honorable place was taken by Verizon colleagues from AT & T. They invested a little less than $ 7 billion, for which they bought out a third of Block B. The rest of the participants spent $ 3.22 billion in total.

Google, whose participation in the auction raised a rather loud hype, did not receive a single license. However, the company's investors took this news positively, which resulted in a small jump in the growth of its shares. This is caused by the disappeared fears that the Internet giant could have moved too far away from its core business into the uncharted territory of the telecom business.

Block D, which had previously been reserved for a warning system for the population of the new generation, remained unredeemed. His fate the FCC will determine after the discussion. At the next auction this block will not be displayed yet.

The frequency spectrum will be completely transferred to the management of the new owners in February 2009, when the licenses of the decimeter television channels working in it today will end (channels 52 to 69).
