Introduced the first prototype of a modular smartphone from Google.

The other day, Google, at a conference for developers, presented the first prototype of its modular smartphone, Ara.

This gadget consists of a frame, called endoskeleton, and interchangeable modules (screen, processor, memory, battery, camera, sensors, wireless communication chips, speakers, etc.). Thus, users themselves can assemble a smartphone for their own needs by connecting, say, a high-capacity battery or a better camera.

At the same time there will be three different sizes of endoskeleton - small, medium and large. By the way, a medium-sized prototype was presented at the event.

The modules are connected to the frame by means of electro-permanent magnets, which, in the absence of current, retain magnetization. The electronic connection of the module with the endoskeleton is based on UniPro technology.

The smartphone will be supported by multiple batteries. If one of them starts to discharge, you can replace it with another one without restarting the gadget.

According to Pavel Eremenko, the head of this project, modular smartphones should be on sale in January next year. We are talking about Gray Phone - a variant of Ara with a minimum configuration, which will include a display, a processor and a Wi-Fi module. Its price is not reported yet, but there is information that its cost price is $ 50
