“Virtual Vision System” for blind OrCam appeared on sale
Hi, Habr!
One of the "exhibits" of my post Expanding the possibilities went on sale. This is an OrCam device that allows people with vision problems to “hear” what surrounds them. Development can be called a "virtual vision system."
Under habrakat - video and details. ')
The video is for illustrative purposes only — not all features are currently available.
In the photo and video - Ms. Negrin, suffering coloboma , a congenital defect in the structure of the eye, which affects one in ten thousand people. She works in a startup ORCAM and is able to use this gadget both to “read” and to move freely and easily.
Opportunities
Technology scans the environment and recognizes faces. If the owner of the gadget is close to a familiar person or place (and these things are added to the device’s memory), OrCam will report this. Gestures allow you to "memorize" objects and faces.
A sensor with an earpiece (bone conduction) is attached to the glasses. Portable base - worn in a pocket or on a belt. Inconveniently, of course, the presence of a wire leading from the sensor to the base.
To operate the device you need to point in the direction you need. This can be either a sign or a vehicle or text in a newspaper. The gadget works only in English, but the company plans to fix this problem.
Using
According to the developers, the use of OrCam occurs at the level of intuition. It is enough to put on the device and point to the desired object, or in the right direction. Training should take only a few minutes.
The camera recognizes objects and faces, as well as printed text, but it is incomprehensible to it. Perhaps this problem will be solved in the future.
Price
The device costs about 2.5 thousand dollars. Currently available in the USA and Israel.
