Flexible transdermal patch for EEG and ECG monitoring

Flexible electronics is developing rapidly. As the Medgadgets has learned, the Illinois Institute has developed a flexible patch for monitoring EEG (electroencephalogram, electrical brain activity) and ECG (electrocardiogram, recording electrical heart signals). The corresponding press release on the launch of the first prototypes was posted on the website of the school.

On the website of the University of Illinois, a press release was recently published about a flexible patch for monitoring EEG and ECG. The first prototypes of flexible devices that are placed on the skin and provide continuous health monitoring have been demonstrated in the past by staff at the University of Illinois under the supervision of John Rogers.

Unlike early experiences with the development of flexible devices, technology required the development of individual components from scratch. This process was difficult because the new components were not easy to make as flexible and efficient as the original ones. As a result of this work, the same development team, in collaboration with a team from Northwestern University, built standard microcircuits into high-performance electronic patches for high-quality ECG and EEG monitoring.

Since the patch contained rigid parts on its surface, the development team modified it using microfluidic technologies that were supposed to be very flexible, soft and contain liquid. The wires connecting the microcircuits to other parts of the patch are flexible in all directions, which makes it possible to wear the patch on almost any part of the body. In fact, the patch receives wireless power and transmits a data signal that is collected and displayed on an external device, such as a smartphone. The creators of this new technology tested and compared the patch with the ECG and EEG devices on the market and found that it “functioned the same way as conventional sensors, but, unlike them, was much more convenient for patients.”
