Epson Moverio BT-200 Details

Let's take a closer look at the Epson Moverio BT-200 video glasses from the user's point of view and the developer.

A little background

The previous version, BT-100, was designed exclusively for highly specialized professional areas and was not sold in Russia. The new BT-200 glasses went through a number of radical improvements that turned them into a comfortable wearable gadget, demanded by a wide range of users today for a wide variety of tasks: from watching movies on the road on a high-quality portable screen to the most complex solutions of augmented reality.

In addition to the binocular 3D display, Epson Moverio BT-200 glasses are equipped with a set of sensors that fix the inclination of the head and the acceleration of the user's movement, GPS position and direction. The built-in camera is used for tasks such as pattern and marker recognition for the implementation of augmented reality, and the microphone allows voice input.

Sensors + 3D = Augmented Reality

All this means that the glasses are oriented in the outside world well enough to be able to complement it with what the user needs, who, having become similar to Terminator 2, will see more than an ordinary person!

What can complement the world?

BT-100 is often used to train personnel in the maintenance of complex equipment. For example, on top of the machine is superimposed its 3D model, which clearly demonstrates the correct sequence of actions.

You can combine the real world with the information received from the geolocation service.

You can play games using head rotation and an accelerometer to determine the player’s position, superimposing virtual objects on real terrain using augmented reality markers, or you can use various pattern recognition algorithms.

Objects can be projected into virtual space using information available in real time via the Internet (for example, the position of other users). All these methods can be combined in different ways, so here the main limitation is the imagination of the developers!

3D display

Augmented reality is like a maximum program. With the Moverio BT-200, you can simply watch a movie, surf the Internet or play games at home or on the road.

The Moverio BT-200 binocular display has a resolution of qHD (960x540), which corresponds horizontally and vertically to half 1080p.

The perceived screen size corresponds to viewing a 40-inch TV from a distance of 2.5 meters - you will agree - this is a great advantage over the screens of smartphones and even the largest tablets.

The glasses themselves have undergone significant improvements from the previous version, becoming two times smaller and lighter by 60% (weight 88 grams), which, in combination with a stylish design, allows them to be used for everyday wear. The display brightness increased by 2 times compared with the BT-100. Included are two removable dimming glass that allows you to block up to 95% of the light, essentially turning the Moverio BT-200 into virtual reality glasses .

It is worth noting that Moverio BT-200 glasses are comfortable and can be worn over ordinary glasses with diopters, and there is a special frame in which you can insert the necessary lenses.

Remote controller

"Brain" Moverio BT-200 is placed in an external "remote", which is a device on the Android 4.0.4 platform. A modern OS not only ensures the highest possible compatibility of the Moverio BT-200 with most of the existing Android applications, but also allows you to easily adapt applications for glasses to make fuller use of their capabilities.

We make a serious bid for application developers. However, video glasses are such a unique product that it is difficult to filter out only those tools that are uniquely suitable for a similar product with standard application store tools. Therefore, it was decided to develop the application store Moverio Apps Market , which will allow developers to distribute paid and free software created specifically for Moverio BT-200. Also, on this service, applications optimized for working with glasses and having passed the appropriate tests will be laid out.

Video Glasses support the USB OTG standard, which allows both to connect peripherals to a USB device, and to connect glasses themselves to other devices to gain access to the built-in file storage.

In addition to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and DLNA, Wi-Fi Miracast is supported , which allows you to transfer video up to glasses to Aull HD wirelessly from any device that supports this standard, or via an optional Epson HDMI-Miracast adapter.

Wi-Fi Miracast TM

Let's sum up:

Epson Moverio BT-200 is an affordable solution for entertainment and augmented reality, both for professionals and advanced consumers. The direction of augmented reality itself is at an early stage of active development, and by offering Moverio BT-200 to the market, a finished product that embodies the experience of developing and using BT-100, Epson strives to provide ordinary users with a ready-made solution for augmented reality, and developers - a full-fledged platform for augmented reality applications.
