Having stumbled upon the Kickstarter project Altergaze, I was surprised not to find an article about him on habrahabr. My article is intended to correct this misunderstanding.
')
What it is?
The project is based on a simple, and therefore very attractive, idea to use a smartphone as a screen for virtual reality glasses. Modern smartphones contain a lot of sensors, data on orientation in space, and the location of which are used in dozens (and maybe already in hundreds) of augmented reality applications. Also today, no one can surprise anyone with a smartphone with Full HD or resolution close to it.
How is this implemented?
It's very simple: the developers have designed a model of glasses, in which two lenses are inserted and there is a pocket for a smartphone. Your favorite smartphone is inserted into the pocket - support for both IOS and Android is announced, developers have created a special camera script for Unity applications that can be used for quick integration, work is being done in the direction of UDK . Supported applications broadcast two stereoscopic images on two halves of the screen, which the user of the gadget observes. It is alleged that the optical characteristics of the lenses allow you to admire a 3D image with a field of view of 110 °, the weight of the gadget (without a smartphone) is about 220 grams.
Still not interested
The highlight of the project is that developers support the open-source ideology. After the project, they promise to put all the details in the form of 3D models for non-commercial use. This step will create a huge field for custom modifications *. * - Lenses and smartphone printing will not work, unfortunately;) Owners of three-dimensional printing workshops are even invited to cooperate in product distribution.
I'm too lazy for that
Nothing wrong! The developers' plans also include the creation of an online store, where you can collect the “glasses of your dreams” in a virtual 3D editor.
How to play if the smartphone is worn on the head?
The problem of interaction in games is proposed to be solved using another gadget that connects to the game as a controller.
Personally, I wish the guys to occupy their niche in the market of virtual reality products, competition is always good! Yes, and the cost of the gadget will be much cheaper than the Oculus Rift;)
