Good day, dear residents of Habr!
I think that there are a lot of people around us who don’t, no, yes, and look at Wikipedia in order to understand
which region’s code is indicated on the number of a passing car , find out
how many people live in India and choose a
film for the evening .
At the same time, not everyone knows how and who supports the work of Wikipedia servers, ensures the development of the engine, and a full working day for the development of the project. This is the work of
the Wikimedia Foundation , a non-profit organization registered in the United States.
Actually, and who are we?
The Wikimedia Foundation is certainly good, but centrally developing Wikipedia sections
in nearly 300 languages is not an easy task.
')
In order that the initiative participants on the ground could also confidently represent the Wikimedia movement, there are regional Wikimedia offices. The oldest and largest of the branches - Wikimedia Deutschland - was founded almost 10 years ago, and it has more than 6,000 members.
The Russian branch, which we represent, was founded in 2008, and we have only 16 people in our team (the answer to the question “why so little?” Is worthy of a separate post on legislative regulation of NGOs in Russia). We, like any other branch, are not legally affiliated with either the Wikimedia Foundation or Wikipedia; Moreover, for many years local branches (with a couple of exceptions) have not received funds as part of the collection of donations.
On the other hand, the status of a legal entity and recognition by the Fund gives a considerable number of advantages: the possibility of using the Fund’s communication channels, holding events under the Fund’s symbols, and communicating on an equal footing with government and commercial institutions.
Why did we come here?
Yes, we are a non-profit organization and exist on donations; Yes, after “weaning” us from collecting donations through the famous banners with the face of Jimbo, our life did not become easier. But our goal here is not campaigning or donation.
The main thing in the wiki movement is people; Neither Wikipedia members nor Wikimedia members of the Republic of Uzbekistan are paid for their activities, we are just interested, and we just want to promote free and accessible information. Therefore, we hope that we will be able to interest someone, and someone will even be inspired by our idea and also begin to promote it.
And what are you interested in our activities?
It is possible that the most correct answer is “we don’t know about you and your activity at all, so we are not interested in anything.” But we are really interested in the opinion from the side - both about the Wikimedia Foundation and about Wikipedia, about Wikimedia RU (if someone heard about us) and so on: this post is a welcome one, in the future we want to write about our work on the
development of free licenses in Russia , about MediaWiki engine and much more, but we are ready to listen to your wishes.
So hello again!
