The world's first prototype of a bionic eye implant, which allows people who have lost it to restore vision, was created as part of the Boston Retinal Implant Project. The device is implanted on the back of the eyeball and works as a transmitter of light waves directly into the brain, which is connected to nerve fibers with a thickness less than a hair.
The technology has certain limitations. In particular, the bionic eye will not allow restoring sight to the blind from birth or suffering from glaucoma. Yes, and restore vision to the perfect with it - while also from the realm of fantasy. The implant works only with more or less functional optic nerves and can return to some extent the vision only to those who could see before. But, despite the shortcomings, this is an amazing development. The bionic eye provides the blind with a general picture of the environment, allowing them to at least get some visual information and, as a result, live a fuller life.
It is clear that the development team is not going to stop there. The researchers plan to improve the prototype so that it allows to recognize small details, such as, for example, mimicry.
