DVD 2.0 - Microsoft and Toshiba rise from the dead

I didn’t expect it, it turns out that Microsoft and Toshiba are not going to sit back and look at the victorious blue ray procession around the world and the legacy of HD-DVD format is not wasted.

Last month, a WG-12 working group was established to “study and specify network applications and related network specifications of DVD forum formats, to recommend the DVD forum and other associations regarding devices connected to the network”.

In other words, Toshiba, Microsoft, and Panasonic have teamed up to create a DVD 2.0 format that will use part of the HD functionality already created for HD DVD. For example, there will be support for an interactive Hdi interface, there will be support for the Super Upconversion mode, which will allow displaying video in resolutions up to 960p. They also promise an advanced copy protection system and, of course, support for network functions.

And the most important thing. The new DVD 2.0 format will be compatible with regular DVD drives! That is, we get HD video with all the "buns", slightly inferior to the quality of Blu-ray, but on regular DVD devices. All that is needed to play the video of a new format is an update of the player’s firmware and the ability to output a high-resolution signal. The Xbox 360 is ideally suited for these conditions. The format war is not over!
