Taxi in New York: visualization of movements for the year

Probably in New York the largest taxi park in the world, or one of the largest. Over the past year, according to MIT, 13,500 taxis carried more than 17 million passengers. This, you know, a lot.

Thanks to modern technologies, specialists managed to transfer all data on taxi movements (GPS coordinates were used) over the past year into a schedule. And the result was quite interesting.

Among other things, the processing of data of this type can be very useful. After all, for example, it is possible to optimize the movement of taxis, if we take intermediate passengers who need from point B to point C, on a route that is already traveling from point A to point D, and segment B-C lies between A-D.

Well, this is just one example. Below is a visualization of the movements of all New York taxis for the year. Interesting statistical information is also shown, how much was earned by taxi drivers, how much carbon dioxide was emitted into the atmosphere, etc.
