Cloudwash: a washing machine with Wi-Fi from the creators of Little Printer

Every couple of weeks, another home appliance gadget appears that has a built-in bluetooth or wi-fi module ... Refrigerators, toothbrushes, stoves and teapots with “built-in wi-fi” cause a stir among geeks, but have not yet received wide distribution.

Recently, the Berg team, known for the Little Printer project , introduced
The Cloudwash project is a washing machine that sends out notifications, with guest access, and itself buys washing powder. Will such washing machines become massive? We'll see.

The company came up with Cloudwash as part of the development of its own Berg Cloud platform - a team of engineers applied reverse engineering to the Zanussi washing machine (they “intercepted” the data transfer between the user interface and control electronics, integrating Arduino Mega there for processing incoming and outgoing signals), connected it to Network, created a new interface for the device and an application for it.

Video demonstration of the project:

“Cloudwash is a new approach to the idea of connected devices, an approach not yet represented in the current generation of home appliances,” the company writes in a blog. Berg says that modern technology either duplicates control functions in applications, or simply works on Android and allows you to run simple applications, such as a calendar or music.

These approaches promise no innovation, engineers write. - Internet connection is an opportunity to do something completely new, these machines can actually become something unique. Cloudwash expresses our idea of how to give it a meaning, how to do something better.

For example, Cloudwash can send a message to the owner before the last wash cycle, so that he can stop the process before he arrives home.

A washing machine has the opportunity to work not only with those who have an application - with “guests or temporary users” (in fact, it can be completely controlled physically, with a built-in display panel): “This is a key principle for us. Connected technology should be easier. I don’t want to log in to my teapot to make tea, ”writes Berg. The machine can, of course, be programmed, for many users, for example, it is possible to schedule the washing or to prohibit it from working at night.

Finally, the washing machine has built-in purchases, although not the same as in Candy Crush Saga. The key on the remote control leaves a reminder or simply buys laundry detergent and air conditioning on Amazon.

Berg believes that this is the germ of a new business model for plug-in equipment.

“Amazon can sponsor a purchase, as all products will be ordered from him. Or Unilever with P & G can sell them with “pre-installed” washes, ”explains the company.

"Household appliances will work as coffee makers with capsules or on the same principles as subsidized smartphones from mobile operators."
