Mozilla investigates why Dell UK is charging £ 16.25 for installing Firefox

The Mozilla Foundation has launched an investigation into the paid service that the British division of Dell offers when buying new computers. For an additional fee of £ 16.25 (about $ 27) a new computer is offered to install the free Firefox browser. For example, when purchasing a desktop computer OptiPlex 7070, this option is offered at the third stage of the choice of configuration and additional services.

"Mozilla will deal with this, because this practice does not meet the conditions and the text of the rules," - said one of the employees of the organization. He refused a more detailed commentary until he consulted with lawyers. But even without lawyers, it is clear that we are talking about the rules for using the trademark, which the Mozilla Foundation specifically registered to prevent such cases when someone tries to sell free software.

Dell UK believes it is in its own right. "In this particular situation, the user is not charged for downloading Mozilla Firefox software, but only a fee is charged that covers the time and labor costs of factory personnel to download a particular software image instead of the standard configuration," said a representative from Dell UK. According to him, this is part of the Dell Configuration Services.

However, the terms of use of the trademark ( Mozilla Trademark Policy ) in the “Software Distributions” section expressly indicate that the distribution of software with the Mozilla trademark “cannot be accompanied by charging fees, be tied to a paid subscription or the purchase of a service.

Downloading and installing Firefox takes a few minutes and any user, even with the most basic knowledge of computer technology, is able to do it themselves.
