The first details of the project of the giant Tesla battery factory are published.

Last fall, Tesla Motors announced plans to build a giant battery factory that will produce as many Li-ion batteries as the entire global industry produces. On February 26, the company published a presentation with the first details about the future factory.

The planned performance of the "gigafabrika" in comparison with the current situation in the industry.

"Gigafabrika", as they call it in Tesla, will be built in the United States. By the time it reaches full capacity in 2020, it will produce battery cells with a total capacity of 35 gigawatt-hours annually. This will reduce the cost of batteries for Tesla cars by more than 30%. Construction of the factory will begin in the middle of this year. Tesla invests about two billion dollars in this project. Another two or three billion partners will invest. The factory will both produce cell batteries from scratch, from the most basic raw materials - aluminum, copper, lithium and chemicals for the electrolyte, and collect batteries from cells from other manufacturers. The total capacity of all batteries produced will be 50 gigawatt-hours per year.

The construction of its own giant battery factory is necessary to start large-scale production of third-generation electric vehicles. The first generation of Tesla electric cars, the expensive sports model Tesla Roadster, was produced in a small-scale fashion. For a premium sedan Model-S has already been established high-grade large production. In 2013, 22 thousand cars were sold. Third-generation cars will be much cheaper and designed for the mass market. By 2020, Tesla Motors plans to sell 500,000 cars a year.
