Scientist kicked out of Harvard for mining cryptocurrency

Harvard University has a massive Odyssey supercomputer cluster. With it, scientists conduct various studies: the calculation of the properties of new materials, the simulation of the brain and so on. But that is not all. Some unscrupulous employees use the supercomputer for other purposes.

Last week, a scientist who mined Dogecoin cryptocurrency on university computers was fired from Harvard.

Dogecoin is one of the many cryptocurrencies that have recently appeared on the Internet. Each user can create their own cryptocurrency , so that a large number of them should not be surprising. Unlike other currencies, Dogecoin was created as a joke, and a funny-looking dog was chosen as the logo. Despite this, the Dogecoin quotes have rapidly gone up, and by now they are many times higher than the level of the initial emission.

Another difference Dogecoin from many other cryptocurrencies is that it can be mined on the CPU, and you do not need to buy expensive GPUs and ASICs (scrypt hash, as in Litecoin). In general, at the moment, the mining of this “amusing” currency can generate income, which is what the Harvard University researcher dishonestly took advantage of.

James Cuff, Deputy Dean for Scientific Computing, warned all employees that the Odyssey supercomputer cluster is not allowed to be used for personal gain or any unscientific project.
