[Recommend] Note to Wi-Fi engineer - radio intelligence (podcast and PDF)
Those who are engaged in the deployment of Wi-Fi, or want to do this, as well as those who just want to be "in the subject" I recommend to listen to the podcast Wireless LAN Professionals. It has a rather slow pace and usually listens on Fast Forward, but sometimes it just comes across nuggets. In particular, the series 52 is devoted to radio intelligence (active and passive): www.wlanpros.com/wlw052-7-rules-accurate-site-surveys
What to do and what not to do when conducting intelligence.
How can you cheat during radio reconnaissance (what not to do, what to fear when receiving).
Active and passive intelligence.
As a bonus, there are arguments on the topic of spectrum analyzers and an interview with the founder of MetaGeek - an amateur.
Nothing cool, but very well summarizes and structures. From comments:
The author piously believes that intelligence software is unable to take into account walls and other obstacles during interpolation - this is not so. But not particularly important for the story.
Such popular tool as iPerf is not mentioned. It may be included in the category described by the author as "It is better not to do at all than to do so."
Also, on the podcast page there are links to PDFs describing the main points - very convenient.
