CMS prevalence study in RuNet, Bynet and Uanete

From August 2013 to June 2014, Openstat investigated the overall prevalence and some other characteristics of site engines - performance (in general and for specific providers), as well as their prevalence separately among suspicious sites and in twelve basic industries. The results are published in this and subsequent articles.

Technique

In 2013, Openstat began regular monitoring of the prevalence of various technological solutions that can be detected when indexing pages of the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet. Significant data for analysis was collected from all of its hosts that responded via an HTTP request. In addition to the study of the national domain zones of Runet, Bynett and Uanet, the sites of other domain zones that Russian-language users en masse have been added to the list of surveyed resources (identified using the DPI technology). This group of hosts corresponds to the graph of the “Others” table. In total, slightly more than 6 million domains were surveyed, among which 4.67 million were used and respectively participated in the study.
')
Each of the site management systems is defined by the OpenStat crawler in one or several ways, advantage through signatures (also called “fingerprints”) in the body or title of the page. For example, Wix is determined by either of two signatures: the presence of .wixpress.com for the server field in the page header or the presence of the string <meta http-equiv = "X-Wix- in the body of the page. Some engines we learned to identify by IP mask And, let's say, the uCoz site designer server is found by the presence of the uServ string in the page header instead of allocating them to 366 unique IP addresses.
With a zero calculation error, there are errors in the method, as well as constant changes in the objects under study.

In existing similar studies and expert ratings, attempts were made to determine the shares of noticeable CMS in the market, setting arbitrary selection criteria for this visibility (the first five, engines that have more than 1,000 installations ...). Such studies actually became a test of the hypotheses of their authors. At the same time, OpenStat uses the Big Data basic approach to research through its crawler: without putting forward any hypotheses or relying on random samples, collect data that is determined by the number of observations of a specific factor available for analysis and try to identify any patterns.

OpenStat researched 81 CMS, including some SaaS and 18 forum engines. The long list of objects has somewhat enriched the final result. For example, the designer of the websites Setup.ru, which regularly dropped out of other reports on the prevalence of CMS, after its entry into the sample of our research, took the eighth line there.
The Openstat service provides by far the most comprehensive national rating of site management systems for today.

The professional community is invited to pay attention to the raw data - before the visual infographics are presented.

The most common CMS in the Russian-speaking Internet, study OpenStat, October 2013

CMS

But if the leaders have only small permutations, although the total share is eroded, then some players can add or lose much even in one month. For example, Wix is so “good at eating porridge” that without threatening the leaders, it nevertheless escaped to the sixteenth place in our network.

In the presented infographics, OpenStat research for August-September-October 2013 was used.
I remind you that everywhere the shares were determined not by money, not by the number of users, but by the coverage of sites.

Engines on suspicious sites

But a study done at the end of last year, which we have not repeated since.

CMS performance

Connecting another tool Openstat - own counter , allowed to determine the most productive CMS.

and the most productive of the popular.

We repeated these studies once a month later, but the results of this second study have already been published on Habré. In short, the numbers turned out to be different, and the leaders are the same.

To be continued.
