On January 22, Debian developers
reported on the internal mailing list that Valve offered every Debian developer a free subscription to
all past and future Valve games for Linux .
The fact is that Debian is working with Valve on the SteamOS project, which is based on the Debian distribution. Thus, Valve wants to thank the community.
On February 10, Ubuntu developers received a
similar offer .
To get free Steam code, Debian developers were asked to write a letter addressed to Joseph Shields (Joseph Shields), signing the letter with a Debian key.
')
Unfortunately, the news did not go unnoticed by the masses. Individual characters began to join the ranks of the developers of Debian and Ubuntu, just to get a lifetime free subscription to the game.
Joseph Shields
writes that by now he has issued 279 keys corresponding to the status of Debian Developer or Debian Maintainer - this is almost a quarter of the possible limit of 1200. At the same time, he rejected 22 requests from people who did not meet the developer’s requirements.
Also found 7 requests from scammers, says Joseph. Two of them referred to the Debian New Maintainer page without activity. There were those who showed activity only a couple of hours ago. Some stated in the letter: I am a developer, here is my signature, although they had nothing to do with Debian at all. Such requests were rejected.
Another five people tried to introduce themselves by another name and produce someone else's signature. One of the scammers even registered a mailbox addressed to the current Debian developer (Sven Hoexter <svenhoexter@gmail.com>) and showed the real key for this address! However, Joseph Shields was so suspicious that he contacted an IRC colleague and clarified whether he really changed his email address. He replied that he did not use any Google services.
A cunning man from France did the following: he scanned the entire db.debian.org database, compiled a list of all French developers — and each of them sent a message through Jabber asking for an unnecessary key.
In general, the percentage of fraudsters is still small: only 12 out of 279 people, but real professionals have not yet entered into the matter. The key distribution will continue in the same order until the limit of 1200 keys is reached.
