Self-destructing reel tape recorder from some movieThe idea of creating self-destructing electronics disturbs the minds of the US military, and not only the US. Only recently there was news that DARPA provided $ 4.7 million to SRI to create biodegradable electronics.
Now funds from DARPA received and the company IBM. As part of a new project, IBM will develop self-destruct CMOS chips. Well, the goal of all this is the same - to prevent the enemy from understanding the structure of electronic devices lost on the battlefield.

As already mentioned, now many units of the US Army use very modern equipment, which is often also classified. And such equipment, forgotten in the enemy's territory, can do a disservice to the former owners by giving out their secrets to the enemy electronics specialists.
To prevent this from happening, the electronics must self-destruct, and not just like that, but on command from the outside. To achieve its goal, DARPA launched the VAPR project, in which some organizations and companies receive funds to develop appropriate electronics capable of self-destruction.
As for IBM, the company will work on the creation of chips to which an active metal layer is attached, separated from the chip by glass. Such chips will be installed electronic devices for the military. In a certain situation, the operator gives the command (remotely, by itself) and the glass layer is destroyed, after which the active material reacts with the chip, destroying it.
