CarPC Functionality

Having read on the Internet about the lucky ones who installed and used a computer in one form or another, I decided to assemble such a device in my VAZ 15 model. At the moment, the project is in the analysis phase, I collect interesting cases and pick up equipment to create a full-fledged CarPC. In this post I want to talk about what equipment and applications I would like to use.

First you need to pick up equipment for use in cars.

Main unit

The main unit selected is my raspberry pi. Since I want a more or less full-fledged computer in my machine, this will simplify the programming task and load my code on the device. It is clear that the disadvantage of this head unit will be its long initialization to the working state. To get around this, I plan not to turn it off at all. Since the capacity of the car battery is limited, a dx battery for tablets will be included in the kit. The touchscreen will also be ordered with dx.
Communication device and GPS
At the initial stage, the communication device will be the old smart on android. He will deal with the distribution of the Internet to the head unit and lead the GPS tracking vehicle movement. Subsequently, it is planned to install individual devices for this with a corresponding modification of the initialization scripts of the head unit.
Connection to the engine controller

The connection to the ECM will be made via the usb cable already purchased on dx and tested on my machine. The software will be selected separately for this, or I will write it myself.

Possible uses


Vehicle tracking
As it will carry the gps track on my server, I can always find out where my car is located

Music center in the car
Everything is clear, there is a sound card, through it you can play music of more or less decent quality.

Device management in the car
I plan to tie everything that is more or less controlled by electronics to my unit. Connection will be in the wiring of wires going to the fuse box and the relay. Control of all this part will be conducted through a relay unit connected via SPI to the head unit. There are blocks up to 32 relays, sold on dx.

Use cases


At the moment there are several problems that I cannot find a solution to. One of them is working in low temperatures, since in my area the daily temperature can drop to -35 centigrade and the issues are the durability of the battery and the overall performance of the device at that temperature.
