The Google Street View project was launched on May 25, 2007, when there were only five US cities in it. Gradually, other cities of the United States and the world, including Russia, began to be added. In early February, a major service update was released and another 300 cities in Russia were added to it. To date, the street view function is available in 500 cities of Russia.
According to the company, a large-scale update has affected even the most remote corners of our country. To get to some of them, Google cars had to be transported on special platforms on a tracked basis. Cars were shipped on airplanes, and sometimes even had to use the help of local residents.
“In 2013, 23 Google cars drove across Russia 298 thousand kilometers and filmed the territory where almost 60% of the country's population lives. Now the street viewing service is available in more than 500 cities. Significant updates have touched the eastern part of Russia. We have mapped the largest Russian island - Sakhalin, Russian Island and the famous Russian Bridge connecting it with Vladivostok, which is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. In addition, we added new images of Lake Baikal, ”Google informs.
