The time has already passed when Windows for the majority of PC users seemed the only possible option. Today, perhaps, no one should be surprised by the installed Linux, and even stylish Macs with Mac OS X preinstalled look more familiar to your tables with us. And, quite possibly, in the future, the choice of the OS will not only expand, but also eliminate the problems with the choice of software, thanks to emulation, virtualization and the appearance of versions of familiar programs for other systems. Fortunately, the developers are trying. Look only at the pace of development of
Mono . And this is just one example!
But I wanted to raise another topic ...
Namely, the development of new systems, even less popular, but developing the right way and having interesting features and great potential.
One of these is
Syllable OS , which is being actively developed by a group of Scandinavian (mostly) developers, distributed under the GPL-license.

Development of Syllable OS was not conducted from scratch. It all started with the now almost forgotten AtheOS, created by the Norwegian programmer Kurt Skauen since 1994. Initially, the author’s goal was to create a clone of the once popular AmigaOS, but later the development went its own way. But, unfortunately, soon after the project was presented to the masses in March 2000, development was stopped (2002). I do not know what prevented the creator's enthusiasm, but ...
July 2002. A group of talented programmers, concerned with the development of the project (more precisely, lack of development), decided to take the initiative in their own hands, thus initiating the creation of Syllable.The authors' goal is to create a simple and convenient OS for a home and a small office. Syllable OS, in fact, is a POSIX-compatible OS, which makes it possible to transfer some familiar applications to it, including the CAM (!!!) GCC with the included utilities. This is a huge plus.
But, nevertheless, the goal was not to create another UNIX-clone, but a completely independent system with its own “goodies”, including:
- inherited from the predecessor of the
AtheOS File System , a very fast and reliable 64-bit journaling file system;
- its own (non-X Window-compatible) graphical user interface;
- own C ++ - compatible API (plus to POSIX-opportunities);
and other features that are becoming more and more.
The desktop OS is quite simple and austere, reminiscent of some environments installed on the X Window System, but in its own way special.
Retreat. Icons
Fans of free software immediately notice that the icons in the system they "somewhere" met. This is nothing terrible and surprising. For those who do not know: the icons are taken from the Tango Desktop Project , a project for creating free icons for open and free software. They are used by GIMP, GNOME, OpenOffice.org, Pidgin, and many other applications.Already, the OS is not an isolated environment. The kit contains IDE (sIDE), WebKit-based (and therefore standards-compliant) ABrowse web browser, email client, player and many other applications created by enthusiasts. And a fairly liberal library license will provide an opportunity for future commercial software manufacturers to think about porting to a new system.
In addition, well-known developments, such as Apache, VIM, Python, Perl, are being actively ported, and the driver base is constantly growing.
Total:
Of course, it would be foolish to agitate everyone to change to the new system. Moreover, it is in the modest position of the Alpha version. But, you see, what the hell is not joking? :) In the future, it is possible to see it on your home PC is not at all unusual! So now experimenters and simply curious users can look at it.

If interested, I can in the next post pay attention to another, no less interesting development -
Haiku , or continue the topic of Syllable, revealing some of the subtleties of the OS.
Pps
Criticism and questions are taken;)
