Why did I change jobs?

At my past job, I stopped using our product because Linux was no longer a priority. A lot of reasons were called - a small proportion of users, “only for geeks”, “all journalists use poppies” and so on.

They simply ridiculed the platform and all the people working on it. For technical questions about porting the browser engine, only jokes “first rebuild the kernel” were heard.

At this point, nothing was going under Linux. Several people began to fix the broken code in order to achieve at least some results. In free time. However, after a few weeks, the management demanded that they stop spending their free time on tasks of little importance to the project.

Moreover, developers working on Linux for more than 15 years have begun to force other development platforms to be used. Needless to say, they cannot use them just as comfortably and productively.

Much more can be said, but all of this is a story of betrayal. The company has betrayed not only loyal users of their product, but also their own developers. Result? Loss of motivation and massive layoffs. Including mine.

I quit Opera Software in Mozilla.

Andreas Tolfsen is the former leader of the infrastructure maintenance team at Opera Software.
