Because of the glitch of Google, thousands of emails went to one Hotmail inbox

Some David Peck received a lot of mail yesterday from thousands of different Gmail mailboxes. This happened because of a very strange bug in Google search results.

For some reason, the issuance of the keyword [gmail] got the email address of David Peck. If the user followed the “Email” link (shown in the screenshot), a form of sending an e-mail message to dsp559@hotmail.om appeared . It remained only to press the "Send" button.

No wonder that people who are searching for Gmail on Google have pressed this button.

The form of sending an e-mail to the address of David Peck

The editors of TechCrunch found David Peck’s resume on the Internet and called him at the indicated number to ask how many letters he received per day. He replied that several thousand, but almost all of them were empty, although some contained a text like “Who are you?” And “Why are you writing to me?”.

“Letters came in at 500 pieces per hour, I could not help it,” says the victim of spam.

The mail flow began the day before, that is, on January 24th. David deleted all the letters in the evening, but in the morning there were 1900 new ones in the box. He contacted Hotmail Technical Support. For obvious reasons, he asked them to respond to their backup email address, which is registered with Gmail.

Google confirmed the inclusion of “some personal email addresses” in the search results and reported that this was not related to a software bug that caused most web services to be disabled for 25 to 60 minutes on January 25 (different users had different ways ), including disabling Gmail. As stated in the technical report on the incident , the reason for shutting down the servers was a software failure of the internal system that generates configuration files. Within 15 minutes, the wrong configuration has spread to working servers.
