Bill Gates lost to Magnus Carlsen in chess in 9 moves

The world chess champion, the young Magnus Carlsen played with Bill Gates on the Scandinavian television channel NRK on the superviews on the air and gave him a checkmate on the ninth move .

On all moves, Bill Gates got 2 minutes, and Carlsen - just 30 seconds. It is strange that he agreed to participate on such conditions at all, because 30 seconds is simply not physically enough to make more than 30 moves (UPD: in the comments they say that 30 seconds is enough for the game). So the odds are very big. Perhaps the organizers expected that in time trouble Carlsen would make a mistake and lose, it would be a sensation.

But the young Norwegian correctly understood the situation. With 30 seconds, he had to use tricks and play aggressively from the start. He immediately led the queen, two horses and an elephant - and moved this army to attack on the left flank, where the king Bill Gates hid after castling.

After the eighth move of black, this position developed on the board.

The risky game of the opponent gave positional advantage to Bill Gates. He could easily develop it, for example, by pushing the rook to e1. Unfortunately, Microsoft’s founder under pressure made a grave mistake on the 9th move, moving his knight to e5. Probably, he conceived a “cunning” combination with an attack on the black's second knight.

Fateful move

Instead of a clever combination, it turned out to be mate in one move. The game lasted 1 minute and 19 seconds.

“Wow, that was quick,” said Bill Gates after the game, smiling shyly. However, it is not at all shameful to lose to the world champion, who became a grandmaster at the age of 13.
