Results of CES 2014: Samsung Smart Home - the smart home of the future

Good afternoon, Habr!

We continue to write about new products, which were presented by Samsung Electronics at the CES 2014 exhibition held in early January. In this post, we’ll talk not only about the product or technology, but about the large-scale, integrated concept of the smart home years dreaming humanity.

Samsung Smart Home is a new service that allows you to integrate smart TVs, smartphones, home and digital appliances into a home network and manage them using a single integrated platform. It is expected that Smart Home will be available to users worldwide in the first half of 2014.

Using the Smart Home service, the user will be able to control all the appliances in the house using just one application, an integrated platform and a server that integrate all devices into a home network: from refrigerators and washing machines to TVs, cameras, smartphones and small devices like Samsung GALAXY Gear.

The three main functions of Samsung Smart Home: Device Management (Device Control), Home Monitoring (Home View), and Smart Customer Service provide the ability to connect to devices anytime, anywhere.

The device management feature will allow you to change the settings of the equipment, regardless of whether the user is inside or outside the house. You can turn on or turn off air conditioning or lighting by simply clicking on the Smart Home application icon on the screen of your mobile device, combined with home appliances into a single network. The possibility of voice control is also provided. It is enough to say a command for a mobile device controller that runs the application, for example, say “go out” in the Samsung GALAXY Gear speaker to turn off the lights in the house, or “good night” to the remote control (however strange it may sound) to the TV obediently turned off.

The monitoring function allows you to display the current image on the smartphone screen from the cameras built into the home appliances. Smart-service will send a reminder about the need to check the equipment and help you call for service in case of any problems or malfunctions.

In the process of creating the Smart Home service, Samsung developers focused primarily on smart TVs, smartphones and home appliances. In the future, the number of devices (both “native” and those produced by other manufacturers) that will support the work with the service will increase significantly. To provide connectivity to third-party equipment, Samsung has developed the Smart Home software protocol (SHP).

In the future, Smart Home will help monitor energy consumption, safety, user health and environmental friendliness - all of these features will be available as new applications are developed, developed in conjunction with partner companies for this new market segment with high potential for growth and development.

By the way, in the middle of last year, Samsung created a special internal organization of the Smart Home Steering Committee. Its main tasks are to make the Smart Home platform accessible to all product groups, coordinate the development of innovative services and expand commercial partnerships.
