Universal encyclopedia " Wikipedia ", which celebrates its birthday today, appeared 13 years ago, in 2001, in the United States. Its creators were two Americans Larr Sanger and Jimmy Wales . They created a forum on the Internet in which they invited everyone in the whole world to work together. All Internet users could participate in the replenishment of the project database.
The ancestor of "Wikipedia" is the Internet project " Nupedia ". But it existed only three years - from 2000 to 2003. The creators of "Nupedia" tried to achieve the scientific quality of the articles, so many topics were edited by scientists for months before they were laid out in universal access. To speed up the encyclopedia replenishment process, on January 15, 2001, the founders of Nupedia, Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales, opened the Wikipedia website. Since then, any user of the World Wide Web can take part in editing the encyclopedia.
Wikipedia got its name from the wiki technology used to implement it. Translated from the Hawaiian wiki means "fast." In May 2001, the Wikipedia language sections were launched: Russian, German, Swedish, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Esperanto, Catalan, Hebrew, Japanese, and a little later they launched Arabic and Hungarian.

It is also curious that the construction of the Pentagon was completed on January 15 (the years of construction were September 11, 1941 - January 15, 1943). This name is the building of the US Department of Defense, which has the shape of a regular pentagon and is located in the state of Virginia, near Washington. It is considered the largest administrative building in the world and the most protected facility in the United States.
