The European Commission (EC) has fined US computer corporation Microsoft 899 million euros for failing to comply with the regulations imposed on the company in connection with the violation of antitrust laws, the EC statement said. The total amount of the record fine, taking into account the initial charges will amount to 1.68 billion euros.
Commenting on this decision, EU competition commissioner Nely Cruz noted that Microsoft was the first company in 50 years to ignore the sanctions of the European Commission. In response to this message, Microsoft announced that these penalties relate to the "past" and to the already "resolved issues" that are not related to the current activities of the company, reports Reuter.
Recall that in 2004. The European Commission has fined Microsoft 407 million euros for abusing its dominant market position, which is manifested in the fact that the company is forcing buyers of its Windows operating system to simultaneously acquire the Windows Media Player. In July 2006 The European Commission fined the company another EUR 280.5 million for non-compliance with the prescription by June 21, 2006. Microsoft appealed this decision and demanded that the requirement to provide competitors with the source code of the server operating system and pay a fine due to abuse of its leading position in the European market was declared illegal.

However, in mid-September 2007. The European Court of First Instance rejected Microsoft’s claim to the European Commission, agreed with the arguments of the European Commission and upheld the fine imposed. The company promised to fulfill all the requirements of the EC, but it demanded payment of high royalties for providing the source code, which was regarded by the European Commission as non-execution of its decision.
